VIU & University of Pristina Sign Memorandum of Understanding

Fairfax, Virginia: Virginia International University (VIU) and the University of Pristina, located in the Republic of Kosovo entered into a Memorandum of Understanding on February 1, 2011. The Memorandum is an agreement on educational and scholarly cooperation between the universities, as well as in research and other mutual interests.

The agreement between the two institutions of higher education opens the door for faculty exchange, student exchange, and equally important – the exchange of scholarly thoughts and ideas in the form of research, conferences, and more. Further, the memorandum opens the door to potential joint-ventures between the universities. VIU is excited about the opportunity to work with universities beyond our borders and to engage in the promotion of higher education alongside the University of Pristina.

Virginia International University is located in Fairfax, VA near Route 66 and Fair Oaks Mall. VIU offers residential and online undergraduate and graduate degrees and diploma and certificate programs in business administration and computer science, a four-level English as a Second Language program with TOEFL and TESOL preparation, and continuing professional education. A LOT has been going on since we last posted! There are so many exciting developments at the University, and it is really fun to watch the way our institution is growing and developing! Here is a list of the major updates at VIU:

Veterans Affairs--VIU has gained approval to offer educational benefits to Veterans of the US Armed Forces! Education benefits are available to veterans under several education benefit programs, such as the Post-9/11 GI Bill, the Montgomery GI Bill – Active Duty, and the Montgomery GI Bill – Selected Reserve and Reserve Education Assistance Program (REAP). We are really excited about this initiative, and are happy to give back to those who serve our country!
MBA Concentrations--We have opened two new concentrations for the MBA Program. We now offer a MBA in Human Resource Management, as well as an MBA in Accounting!
2010 Commencement Ceremony--We want to congratulate our hard-working graduates from the Summer 2009, Fall 2009, and Spring 2010 semesters! They will be recognized at the Commencement Ceremony on May 1, 2010 at Langley High School in McLean, VA

We have a great deal of new developments in the works right now, including a TOEFL Testing Center. Check back soon for updates!

Two New Programs at VIU!

VIU is proud to announce the addition of two new programs that have been added to our already diverse body of education! Opening in the spring semester of 2010 will be a Master of Arts degree in TESOL, and an undergraduate certificate for medical administrative assistants! MA TESOL: The Master of Arts in TESOL, is a highly sought-after, specialized graduate degree that will enable students to teach the English language to non-native speakers. Jobs in this field can include anything from ESL instruction inside the United States, to travelling to other countries to teach English--it could be the experience of a lifetime! VIU provides a unique opportunity for students in this program, as we educate students from more than fifty countries. The hands on experience that our TESOL students will gain is unmatchable at other institutions! VIU's Medical Administrative Assistant Certificate is a great alternative for new high school graduates who have an interest in the medical field. The certificate only takes one year to complete and gives students hands on experience by placement in an internship as a part of the curriculum. Students will be educated in a variety of areas including medical terminology, anatomy, insurance processing, ethics, patient relations, and much more! Virginia International University is giving our student body a chance to win $500.00 by referring their friends for the Spring 2010 semester! This is in addition to the $100 we currently offer for each student referral. The competition will be kicking off TODAY, November 10, 2009 and will last through December 9, 2009, (that leaves you an entire month to work towards the $500.00 grand prize)!

Posters have been hung in each campus to indicate the students that referred someone. Official Rules and Regulations can be obtained by contacting Hilary or Tina at the Waples Mill Campus. Not only will the student with the most referrals win a minimum of $500.00 (plus $100.00 for each student), but the person who lands in 2nd place will receive a $250.00 prize.

New Summer Schedule!

VIU is pleased to announce that we have decided to re-structure the summer semester! Instead of holding one 10 week session, VIU has decided to schedule two different 8-week summer semesters! This means that if you would like to study in the summer, but are torn because you also want to actually have a summer vacation, you now have the option to choose both. The first 8-week session will begin in early May and end in late June. The second 8-week session will begin in early July and end in late August. Speeding through Summer

It has been a busy summer for everyone at VIU and there is a lot to update everyone on:

The Housing Department has updated us that there will no longer be a $175.00 Accommodation Fee. We have deemed that this is a service that each student deserves to take advantage of at no cost!
The Marketing Department has started a promotion to reward our students for their referrals! If you refer a friend to VIU and htey list your name on the application, VIU will reward you with $100 off of student fees! For more details, contact the Marketing Department!
Orientation is almost here again! VIU will welcome all of our new students on August 27th at 9:00 AM at the Waples Campus. The orientation will be followed by a picnic to welcome all new students to the USA!
The ISS Office welcomes all students to stop by for a visit if you are travelling this summer. There are some special procedures you will need to take care of prior to travel.
OPT!!! Our ISS office asked that we remind any students who are in their last semester of study that if you wish to stay in the United States, it is an excellent idea to sign up for OPT. Contact Yukari or Liz for more details!

VIU Opens Oracle Certificate and Diploma Programs!

As technology advances, career professionals require up-to-date skills to meet the requirements of employers. VIU’s aOracle Database Administrator and Developer Diploma provides the latest Oracle technologies that enhance the skills required for the Oracle 10g concentration. Many employers require certification for Oracle database positions.

In VIU’s Oracle Diploma program, students will develop basic and advanced skills in the installation, configuration, development and administration of Oracle enterprise databases as well as skills in using Oracle technology for developing and programming Oracle applications. Graduates should also qualify for entry level and career Oracle database administrator, database designer, database programmer, database application developer, and other database positions.

Students will study database design, the SQL database language, Oracle’s PL/SQL programming language, database administration, and application development. VIU’s Oracle Diploma Program is based on the Oracle WDP (Workforce Development Program) curriculum.

The program provides hands-on experience and also prepares students to take several Oracle Certification exams at the Associate, Professional and Master levels:

Graduate Programs

Virginia International University offers two graduate programs:

Master of Business Administration (MBA)
Master of Science in Management Information Systems (MMIS)

The graduate programs provide a high level of professional education and cover a broad range of subjects, thereby qualifying students for more diverse job opportunities after graduation. Both of these degrees are earned by completing the program course requirements of 36 credit hours (3 credit hours per course, beyond prerequisite courses). The MBA program has four concentrations: International Business Management, International Finance, Marketing Management and Health Care Management. MIS program offers two distinctive concentration areas: E-Business Development and Management and Information Technology Security.

Undergraduate Programs

VIU offers undergraduate degrees in both Business Management and Computer Science. Both of VlU's bachelor's degree programs are composed of 42 courses.

Bachelor of Science in Business Administration

This program is composed of 40 courses: 12 general education courses (GEC), 6 foundation, 12 core courses, 6 concentration courses and 4 elective courses. Each course consists of 3 credit hours. VIU offers a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in the following four concentration areas: International Finance, Marketing, Finance and International Business.

Bachelor of Science in Computer Science

The CS program is composed of 40 courses: 12 General Education Courses (GEC), 14 Core courses, 6 Computer Science Elective courses, 4 Math courses, and 4 Other Electives. Students complete 86 credits hours of major courses and 36 credit hours of General Education Courses.

Career Diploma Programs

A diploma/certificate program is a set of courses that will provide you with the necessary skills to begin a career, advance in a current position or promote professional growth. The courses in the diploma/certificate programs are credit courses. Diploma programs are for two semesters and require a total of 24 credits.

Business Career Diploma/Certificate Programs

Two concentrations are offered in the business program:International Business and Small Business Management.

Computer Diploma/Certificate Programs

We offer a Computer Programmer diploma program.

Language Programs

Virginia International University offers two language programs:

ESL Program

VIU’s English as a Second Language (ESL) program is a semester-based program that offers instruction at four proficiency levels, from Elementary to College Preparatory. The primary purpose of this intensive program is to prepare students for academic and professional work. VIU’s ESL program offers both full-time and part-time study, including a TOEFL iBT preparatory course. As well, the schedule includes a variety of content-based ESL electives to appeal to a wide range of interests. These may include courses in Vocabulary, Business English, American Culture, Current Events, Drama/Acting, and Journalism. VIU’s ESL program is a daytime, weekday program with highly qualified and experienced instructors. Classes attract diverse students who share an interest in improving their conversational, academic, and/or business English skills.

Teacher of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)

VIU plans to launch this program during the Fall 2008/ Spring 2009 Academic Year. VIU’s TESOL certificate program prepares native English and near-fluent speakers of other languages to teach ESL and EFL. Each semester of study includes a classroom-based teaching internship that may be completed within VIU’s ESL program.
